Good Entertainment

M. LUCKY is Mars & Sam, a band from Amsterdam. In a city that moves quickly and is starting to look like a theme park their upcoming album Good Entertainment reflects these weird times.

“Amsterdam is turning into Disneyland, some people here seem to be made of plastic and there's a lot of weird rich people who need more and more entertainment to numb the pain of power and luxury.

The title track Good Entertainment for instance, is about a Black Mirror style entertainment subscription where you pay a monthly fee to a company that turns your life into this bizarre fever dream. Just so life isn't as boring. It describes a scene where you get home, walk into the living room and find your neighbour on your table, naked. See what happens. Let them cook. We really think this stuff could be cool. Or at least, a bit cooler than this whole get rich really quick and feel weird and anxious and stressed thing that we seem to be doing now.

We didn’t really have a place to go to work on this album so we made it on a laptop, everywhere we could. In a car, in the woods, in Japan, in Amsterdam, our drummer friend has a space and we worked there we had some money for a studio, so we recorded in Gent for a bit, but it was really scrambled in a nice way. Life kind of could live through the album, instead of holing up and cranking it out while extremely caffeïnated.

This album is just about nothing and everything at the same time. When you decide not to care anymore, apparently these big themes seem to pour out of you. We really just didn’t give a rats ass about what anyone would think, except for us trying to make something that we thought was at least ‘very acceptable’. We don’t really go for great, greatness comes and goes so quickly, we really don’t know what that is. So we got it down to ‘Let’s Try To Not Suck’, and then things really started to get pretty good and we felt we could write about Trump, love, Zuckerberg, big dreams, not being able to find a house, not seeing a future, Netflix, all the other weird stuff. Without going into it with a pencil behind your ear and a big piece of empty paper saying ‘we need something really cool right here’. For us it’s taking a trip to some insane toystore or another really absurd place and then just find the godly inspiration through imposing this purgatorial feeling onto ourselves and then running back into the studio and see if we can write three songs real quick before we can get back to some sort of yoga practice to unwind again.

When it was time to mix the album, we decided to buy a cheap old Volvo V70 so we could drive around listening to the mixes. It hasn’t been easy. Amsterdam is really fucking horrible to drive through, so this has proven to be a terrible idea. It did spark the idea of the music being a little crazy. That’s really what we want it to be. Fun and crazy. Ah that sounds super dumb. It just has to be a little bit overwhelming. That’s why it’s crunchy and a bit fucked up pop music. We’re not sure if you should want to listen to our full album in one go. No one will do that anyway. We might as well just fake an album of snippets and then everybody will be stoked if the twenty seconds are spicy enough. The music is not serious and it’s very serious at the same time. The next one will be so different too. We’ll see what happens.”
